About the Project

Building a Rear Steering Recumbent Bike

Well, the existing recumbent bikes are all front steering with long connected chains till the rear. To get rid if the chains, make it lighter and move away from the conventional design, I under the guidance of mr. Sudipto Dasgupta started this project.

Duration of the project - 2 weeks

Existing Recumbent Bikes

Change Over . Unconventional Thinking .

Since there are not many people who have tried making a rear steering recumbent bike I started with a blank canvas. Taking inspiration from Buckminster Fuller's dymaxion car, I started creating drawing for a rear steering bike. Taking the form and purpose of a recumbent bike I intended to add new functionality to it.

I found a cycle that was in need of major repair work and salvaged some parts of the bike to build my recumbent bike. I cut down the required pieces to connect it to the mainframe which I built by bending steel pipes. welded them together and took it out for a test run.

I tested and studied the recumbent bike I made to know about its limitations and find points where I could improve them. The bike was sitting too low and the back support was limiting my body movement. the pedals were high above hence caused inconvenience. I made a lot of changes to my design and here's a depiction of it.
